I did receive a cheque for £10,500. I took it to the bank and showed them the correspondence I'd been receiving.

Stuart from HSBC fraud team called and told me I’d been subject to the 419 scam.

The 419 scam is named after the penal code in Nigeria for advanced fee fraud. Apparently you bank the cheque and after four days – when the cheque is cleared- you mail the money on often via Western Union (the scammers told me this 10.5k was for Inland Revenue before getting the real winnings!) In the meantime, the cheque would have actually bounced (my cheque was from a ‘lost’ book) and if I’d wired the money on (supposedly for Inland Revenue)..I’d then owe the bank £10,500! This is a scam basically to beat the clearing cycle!!

Everyone should STAY CLEAR!!!!

Got the same email as Roger and Emiliano...has anyone actually got any money from it?...I'm apparently about to receive £10,000 cheque in the post for Inland Revenue before big winnings can be sent out!!- haven't given any bank details or personal details (just work) and playing along to see how far this goes...wise? or stupid?

also a recipient of the Linda Smith mail and 300,000 to the good because of it (not)- note that sify.com is an Indian "news portal" which no doubt flogs email addresses cheap as well. cant quite see what they are after at this stage, but presume phishing for bank details later in the exercise.

had a similar "lottery win" at the ned of last year, but curiously they didnt respond to me trying to collect the money as I failed to dosclose bank details.
